Cuthills
Vineyards
Pierce, NE
Nestled in the rolling hills of northeast
Nebraska, you will find Cuthills Vineyards. Located just 3 miles west
of Pierce and north of Willow Creek State Recreation Area, a 1,600 acre
recreation park, with a 700 acre lake.
Ed Swanson chose the 15 1/2 acres for
its rolling hills and location for growing the 50+ varieties of wine
grapes, most of which were planted in 1985. Some of the French hybrid
grapes grown at Cuthills Vineyards include: deChaunac, Leon Millot,
Marechal Foch, LaCrosse, Chancellor, Vidal, St. Croix, St. Pepin, Reliance,
Baco, Cabernet Franc, a few Viniferas, and some 1,200 experimental varieties.
Two - 14 year old vineyards are located
on the acreage using 4 acres of space, with 2 more acres planted in
June of 1997 and a new acre planted in July of 1998 for a total of 7
acres of grapes. Swanson, who has been making wines for over 26 years,
and his wife Holly, remodeled the weathered barn built in 1920 by John
Koeppe, into the winery, and opened December 17, 1994. Wines have been
made from the present vineyards since 1990.
In the fall of 1998 Cuthills Vineyards added over 4,000 square feet
of production area, a cave-like barrel room, kitchen, more patio space
and finished off the hayloft. These rooms and the grounds are available
for everything from a corporate retreat to vineyard weddings.
Cuthills Vineyards focuses on producing
wines that pair well with food. Wines vary from completely dry to sweet.
Wines include: (depending on the grape harvest) a barrel fermented and
aged dry white, semi-dry white, semi-sweet blush, barrel aged dry reds,
a bottle fermented sparkling wine, semi-sweet white, apple wine, Mead
(made from 100% honey), and other fruit wines.
Ninety percent of Cuthills wine is sold at the winery or shipped to
consumers (void where prohibited). The rest is sold in limited supply
to select restaurants and liquor stores. To date only fifteen states
allow direct shipments to consumers.
